Pretty in Purple? August 7, 2009

Yes dears, I did watch Pretty in Pink last night. God, Molly Ringwald is just the coolest, isn’t she? She’s my second favorite actress, the first being Meryl Streep- and coincidentally I watched the Devil Wears Prada last night too. Since my sister is at Lollapalooza I just borrowed it out of her room.

So beyond the fact that I watched the movie last night, this post is called Pretty in Purple because I have a party starting at four today to go to and I have just finished tarting up for it. And I’m wearing, well. Purple. I’m wearing a purple v-neck t-shirt that reads: “Love, New York” on it in yellow letters and a blue jean skirt from Old Navy, and a pair of flip flops from American Eagle. I really want to get more pink into my wardrobe since I love it. Though I may sound like a total Barbie from these posts, the truth is that I don’t own a single pink thing, and it’s annoying me like nothing else. :(  Even in my makeup I have very little pink, as my two lipsticks of choice are a dusty rose and a bright berry color.

I really do want to get some nicer make up though. I mean, yes, the stuff I get at CVS is very nice and all, but today I got a Macy’s catalog and kept thinking “Oh, I want that! Ohhhh, I want that!” Honestly, you have no idea how badly I wanted that Hello Flawless face make up or if I wanted the Dr. Feel Good cream to give you a matte complexion, or did I want the Peaches and Cream Blush? Maybe I wanted the Bad Gal Lash Mascara? It was a little bit depressing, since I wanted all of it, and at the lowest they were all at least nineteen bucks a pop. That might sound cheap, but that’s just for the mascara. And I don’t know about you, but I could never look at my mother in the face again out of guilt if I ever persuaded her to buy something like that for me. I mean, honestly, i could never make her pay thirty six dollars so I could be “Hello, Flawless!”, don’t you agree?

Thank God I like looking at the products better than buying them, otherwise I would never be able to live middle class like I do so well. :)

Your Eyes? August 5, 2009

I notice that people fixate on eyes a lot in songs and in literature. Mostly songs. Think about it- Brown Eyed Girl, Your Eyes, In Your Eyes, Beautiful Brown Eyes(which I happened to play for my piano midterm, and totally nailed)- it’s all about the eyes. And it’s pretty much fine in songs. But sometimes I think it’s so cliche when a character has special eyes, or if the eyes are fixated on. It makes me so happy when they point out that the lips are perfect or they have a pronounced nose. but hey, I guess other people like it. What brought this up was that I was listening to In Your Eyes today- you know, the one from Say Anything? Where the guy held the boom box over his head? NOW you remember it. It’s a good song.

Anyways, I have a bit to do after this, as I have to write my chapter back(though I have plenty of time, I have the muse now) to Danny.

Toodle-oo.

Babysitting Day August 3, 2009

So today I babysat my cousin for the day while my aunt took my other cousin out for doctor’s appointments and such. It was pretty fun, we played barbies and made a hot new drama.

Juliet’s mother wants her to marry Pen. (she didn’t bring any Ken dolls) Juliet wants to marry Romeo(who we just made invisible for the lack of male barbies). Her mother refuses because Montagues have cooties. And so, much to the dismay of her mother, Juliet elopes. Her mother leaves her desperate and annoying and constant voicemails in an attempt to get her to return home- sans Romeo. When this doesn’t work, she hatches an evil plan. She calls Juliet and says that Romeo can marry her. But then when they come home, JM(Juliet’s mother) pulls a classic case of “What’s that behind you, Juliet?!” and locks Romeo in the basement. A very confused Juliet takes Pen’s hand in marriage, when Romeo bursts in and reveals the ploy. In one final act of desperation, JM quickly eats Romeo in one bite. Juliet is angry and attempts to pull Romeo out. To save her own life, JM agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet by her own hand once Romeo… comes back. So eventually JM does return Romeo and marry the two of them, but are forced to live out their live’s in JM’s basement.

In case you can’t guess, I played Juliet’s mother and Romeo. :) My little cousin was Juliet. She doesn’t really know the play that well(and lately it seems that all she talks about is Romeo and Juliet), so instead of telling her all the dirty of details of the star crossed lover’s double suicide(no one should hear that under ten, at LEAST) I just told her that it was a sad play about two people from fighting families who loved each other, and that there wasn’t a happy ending. All because Balthazar is STUPID. It was all Balthazar’s fault. And Friar Lawrence’s fault, for showing up ten seconds late to save Romeo’s life. And then he ran away and let Juliet kill herself. For the love of Mike.

We also I took her to the playground twice and we agreed that it was the worst playground ever. There wasn’t that much for her to do since the tiny little slides, jungle gyms, and swings were not built for my five foot ten frame by any means. Anyhoo, then my aunt and my uncle came back with my cousin, and I colored pictures for her and then we went out for dinner.

And I got another bargain. There is a straightener that I have been eyeing that straightens wet hair- that’s right, the Remington Wet2Straight Straightener. It’s around thirty dollars if you buy it online, but today I found it at the Christmas Tree Shop for SEVENTEEN DOLLARS! Okay, I’m going to sing it! Don’t you just love a bargain! (This is the Christmas Tree shop jingle for those who have no clue right now)

I’m excited to have it since it will make my routine that much easier when I go to school September first, la la la. Oh wait. Ech. September first. Before Labor Day. Shite.

So in other words I’ve had a pretty good day. :)

Bargains? Bargains! August 2, 2009

Oh, bargains! How I love you!

Today I went shopping. Now now, don’t give me that look. That “I knew it. She’s a blond teenage girl, she has to be shopaholic!” Ah no. I went shopping by myself, and that means that I am definitely not going to be allowed at the mall without anyone to watch my back(says my mum). That and malls are no fun without friends. Though for some reason I only buy things when I shop by myself. So my mother dropped me off at the mini mall(which for those who don’t know for some reason, means a few stores, a Stop and Shop, and a Staples, though in some cases you could argue a Wal-mart or Linens and Things). My stores I go into pretty much are f.y.e. and Payless and Staples(I’m obsessed with sharpies). My trip started with Payless.I tried on EVERY pair of shoes besides the ugly ones, but I couldn’t find anything that I would really be willing to pay for. What I was really looking for was a pair of high heels. But I don’t think I’m going to buy heels at Payless, since they were all a little too big. Which if you didn’t know already, is insanely dangerous. So I grabbed a pair of (totally fake)silver earrings, since I’ve needed a pair. And since it was Payless, it was nine dollars. Bargain number one. And then I went into Staples and didn’t buy anything, but I did stop to admire a 24 Pack of Sharpies. Where can you get gel pens? I want gel pens!!!! So, since I spent nothing, I guess we could say bargain number two? And then there is finally f.y.e., which was having a buy three get the fourth one free sale. Can anyone say yay?I got four used CDs (Transformer-Lou Reed; Pornography- The Cure; Singles- The Smiths; and The Crane Wife-The Decemberists)for twenty eight dollars. Right now I’m listening to Vicious by Lou Reed. Next up is Andy’s Chest. Which is my second favorite Lou Reed song. :D First is Coney Island Baby.

So I come home and ugly myself up (take off my lipgloss, change into sweatpants, let my hair down, etc.)and my sister calls me to help her take up her stuff, since we live in a third floor apartment. She had just shopped until she dropped at the Christmas Tree Shop. So we both had a wonderful bargain day. Then I borrowed To Kill a Mockingbird, and I’m going to read it once I finish posting.

I absolutely love this song. (Andy’s Chest) What’s your favorite song?

The Beatles and High School August 1, 2009

I love the Beatles. This may make me some cliche, but I don’t care. I absolutely love them so much- and I always will. And like every Beatles fan does, I have my favorites. My favorite album is Abbey Road. Interestingly enough, my favorite SONG is not off of Abbey Road. My favorite Beatles song is Don’t Let Me Down. That’s off Past Masters, I think. Everyone has their favorite Beatles song. My Dad’s favorite is Let It Be, my friend Earin’s favorite is Eleanor Rigby, my sister Rachel’s is Something. As a matter of fact, I’m listening to Don’t Let Me Down right now. I completely LOVE it so much. It’s just so- well, I guess I like it because it says what it means. You don’t get that a lot with songs. Not to mention the killer musical quality.

So, I have FINALLY finished my paper for Columbus. And let me tell you, I did not pull any punches. What he and his soldiers did was genocide. It just is. Well, I know you don’t read this blog to hear about CC, and he’s already the biggest tag in my tag cloud, so this is the last you will hear of him.

Oh, and I guess, from checking the website, that I’m going to be going to school at the home of the Titans. Which is actually a step up in team names from before- a Titan would kick the crap out of a wildcat in a fight, wouldn’t it? So yes, I’m a Titan. Remember me! Bahahaha. I amuse myself way too much. There are some pretty bad team names out there. I’ve heard a few: The Beagles, The Wildflowers(I’m serious), among other things. I actually have a pretty funny story. I used to go to a Catholic school for kindergarten through second grade, and our mascot was the Devils. Ironic, huh? The funny part is that after I left I heard from my friend that went there that a new principal had come to the school and was horrified with the choice of mascot, so now they’re called the Saints or something. All these mascots I’ve been, I almost wish I was good at sports.

WordPress has a red line under Beatles. How dare they.

Howdy? July 31, 2009

I have just noticed for the first time that in the corner of this page it says: “Howdy, Hannah.” And it is really the first time I have ever heard someone say Howdy, and they aren’t even saying it to me. Do you have any idea how much it would make my life for someone walking by to wave to me and say “Howdy”? Probably won’t happen, but one can dream, can’t they?

Right now it is about… five twenty six in the morning, and I can’t say that I got that much sleep last night. But that always happens- every few weeks or so I have nights where I don’t sleep, I just lay there and think all night about whatever. It’s sort of relaxing, because it is one of the few times you can sit there quietly without people asking you what you are thinking about because they aren’t there. (Unless of course you share a room with a sibling, in which case, it is probably them that is the reason you aren’t following asleep and/or they don’t care what you’re thinking about; trust me, I’ve been there) When some people don’t get enough sleep at night, they sleep in to get in the extra hours. I just can’t. If I’m up, I have to get up and do something. So since my TV is broken and not fit for movie watching, I thought “Why not post now?”

And besides, I am going to see 500 Days of Summer with my sister later and would not be able to post until much later otherwise. I hope you don’t get used to very very early posts, since I am afraid that after September First they will all be after school, but far more eventful.

I glance over to a picture on my desk, which is a framed photo of my sisters and I at Christmas a few years ago, and by a few, I mean between nine and ten years ago. I’m sitting in my sister’s lap and wearing Looney Tunes footie pajamas. What can I say? I’ve always been a rock star.

Summer Homework is BAD news. Blue nail polish isn’t. July 30, 2009

Isn’t it? I mean, summer reading is fine(except for the bogus books they put on the list which are far too easy/boring to take seriously), but the other stuff is so blah. I told you in my previous post about my essay on Christopher Columbus that I am supposed to be doing. And while the actual essay part is pretty easy, we are only allowed to use information from two readings that we were given on CC. Let me tell you, this is some dry, dry, stuff. I think I am going to read it in it’s entirety once and then attack it with the high liter.

This reminds me of a funny story. I was at the mall with a few friends at the beginning of this month, and my friend Jes and I decided to stop into a Souper Noodle for lunch. So we chit chatted over a plate of shared crispy chicken noodles(which I must say I was getting less than my fair share of because I was less experienced with chopsticks ;) ) Jes knew about the paper that I had to do(she doesn’t have to do the paper since she’s taking Honors) and said “How is your paper going?” This was not a good question because the fact that I had to do it was something that I was avoiding completely. So after a pause I just answered “Great.” But, oh Jes, you know me too well, because she just gave me one of those looks and said “… Great because you haven’t started it?” and with a pause for shame I had to nod into the noodles and say “… Yeah…” That was a pretty good laugh, but now I am kind of freaking since I only have a little over a month to do it. School here starts on September first. :(

So anyway, on a happier note, who else it totally happy that blue and green nail polish is making a comeback? I remember sitting in the salon with my sister who was getting her usual red polish, and saying, as she gave my blue nails a doubtful look: “What? It’s a great color.” And no sooner than a week later I get my Seventeen magazine and there it is, latest trend is blue and green nail polish. And as usual no one knew I was ahead of my time. XD Right now my nails are a cool greenish blue color. It’s by New York Color and is called “East Village.” I think next time I paint them I will go Emerald Green. :D How about you guys?

The Ups and Downs of Personal Style July 29, 2009

Style is a complicated thing. It means something different to everyone, and there are so many different styles. For example- I have my style. Which is… well. Hard to explain. Bright-kitsch-retro? To put it simply, I sort of mix  vintage and timeless with bright and fun, so it’s pretty fun. Some of my personal favorite clothing websites include:

modcloth.com-Gorgeous vintage and vintage inspired clothes. A lot of the dresses(gorgeous-!) are pricy, but they have adorable accessories and jewelry that is usually cheaper.

Fredflare.com- Cool kitschy accessories for cheap. They have some clothes too, but I am a fan of their accessories, where they have those awesome wayfarers(“Risky Business Sunglasses”)in every color you could imagine.

shanalogic.com- Absolutely adorable and wild accessories, jewelry, and clothing from indie designers throughout the country. When you order something from there you are supporting the small businesses of artists, which is important to me.

palmercash.com- Wicked cool tee shirts and accessories, and they also have really nice basics. They have awesome hoodies and sunglasses.

And many more. Then there are some people, like my friend, who melt when they see a guy in tight grey jeans(or even tight pink jeans) and black arm warmers covered in chains, and also like something similar for themselves. And let me tell you, she can pull it off better than I ever could, since she feel comfortable and confident knowing that she is being herself. (not to mention the fact that I have big hips, so I would look lopsided in skinny jeans)

There is an unfortunate prejudice that people have over other people’s personal style. I remember one time last year I was sitting in Comics in Society class and there was a group of people talking about this guy at our school who wore dark trench coats and platform boots. And they were saying that he was scary and weird and a freak and I was a little confused and I said “All because of the way that he dresses?” and this guy looked at me as if I had asked him what the color the sky was and said: “Well, yeah.” To me, this is unfortunate. I have never spoken to this guy with the trench coat, so I wouldn’t know, but is it really right to take the way someone dresses and assume that they were a certain way? I don’t think so. Now, at first this doesn’t seem to be like such a big deal. After all, isn’t judging based on clothes a part of high school? I may be speaking up on my high horse here, but the truth is that there was a time in middle school and even the beginning of ninth grade(a very long time) when I would look at someone in a shirt from Hollister or American Eagle and think: “Oh, what an asshole, what a prep.” without actually speaking to the person, since that was the stereotype I had associated them with. But then I finally had a point where someone asked me why I had to label like that and I thought, “Huh. Well… I don’t.” and since then I have tried to give people a chance. And what has happened since then has been great! I have friends who shop at Hot Topic and friends who shop at American Eagle, and I can shop anywhere I want without worrying about seeming too preppy or too emo or too goth. Personal style should be a beautiful expression of who you are, and you will feel better and respect yours more if you also respect other people’s.

So, away from this longwinded discussion of clothing, my mother finally received a phone call from the school I am switching to, and the good news is that I can do my old school’s summer assignment so I have the time that I need. This means I have the usual summer reading, and a three page essay on what extent Christopher Columbus should be lauded a significant figure in US History. Since we have to double space, that will take me no time. What do you have to do for summer homework?

See you guys later!

Tell me, if you were in a movie, what would your soundtrack be, or at least what would the highlight song be?

Can I profess my love for sound tracks? They’re just so awesome. Some of my personal favorite soundtracks were the ones to Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Elizabethtown, and Juno. And of course, all the soundtracks from my favorite musicals, but I feel like that’s a little different, if you know what I mean.

To sum it all up: I love soundtracks. And music.

………….

Madam I am here. What is your will? July 28, 2009

Hi, I’m Hannah. :) This is my first post ever, how lovely and insignificant that is.

This blog is to give an inside look into teenage life and what goes on in the mind of a normal(okay, a not so normal) teenager.

I am soon to be a Sophmore. I just moved and am going to be starting at a new school. It’s a little crazy and hectic but still really exciting in a way. I mean, that opens up a lot of doors for me. (And also I am very, very, glad to leave my old high school as this is the year they will be opening a manifesto of strict rules that I was not excited to follow in the first place, and this new school is the perfect escape from that) I’ve only just moved into my new apartment, but my room(and my computer :) is all set up and ready to rock and roll.

So a little about me: I love music, and right now I especially love classic and indie rock- you know, The Smiths, The Cure, Big Star, Broken Social Scene, all that good stuff. I also love me a good musical- my favorites are Spring Awakening(very favorite, I highly recommend it) and RENT(which almost every musical lover adores). I love reading and writing. I’ve always been a little left of center.

Currently I am: listening to Thirteen by Big Star; wearing a grey and darker grey striped tee shirt dress; and thinking about how the walls in my new room are a bit blank and could use a poster or two.

More posts to come! I look forward to it!
